Hello everyone!

Since the majority of time I spend involves researching, studying, or labbing a technology, I've put up a new section. I'll be listing topics, my notes, and links to resources, books, articles, etc. It's not meant to be an exhaustive list. Just a place I can reference.

Since I'm currently involved with a ISO 27001 project, a lot of time will be going into researching and studying the ins and outs of that. I may blog about interesting finds or topics, but I've build it as a separate page to not clutter the posts.

If you've worked in technology, for any length of time, you've probably heard of ISO. It may had been in class, a book, or when working with a particular standard defined in your area of technology. I had as well, but nothing beyond the obvious of, they do standards in multiple counties. Usually it was the standard itself, that was my focus. This time I wanted to take a look.

The International Organization for Standardization "(ISO) is an independent, non-governmental international organization with a membership of 164 national standards bodies...bringing together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant International Standards." Begun operations 1947 and based out of Geneva, Switzerland. Knowing the acronym for the name would be different for the different languages, "the founders decided to give it the short form ISO. A Thing I Learned Today

Looking for a way to make a simple Question and Answer solution for little quiz/reflection sections in my blog posts, I came across many CSS/JS solutions, but the simplest solution, was to use the HTML details tag. I could pose a questions, unveil an answer, just what I needed.

The details tag encapsulates a summary and paragraph tag, that when the summary item is clicked, it reveals the paragraph text. There is also an attribute which specifies if the paragraph details are visible to the user by default.

See the snippet below, as an example.

iOS App for Remote Desktop RDP

Working in a mostly Microsoft environment, it's no surprise, most of my lab is Windows based as well. Remote administration has gotten easier with things like PowerShell, and WMI, but at times, jumping on the GUI desktop is what's wanted.

My primary device for the last year has been an iPad Pro Air. With the exception of a few things like sniffing wireless or injecting packets, this was a total laptop replacement. Recently, I've acquired a Mac Air to enable me to run Xcode, and use as a development laptop, so a Mac App would be nice too!

My Pick

I tried quite a few Remote Desktop apps, before finally selecting Microsoft's Free Remote Desktop Client. It does everything I need it to, and they have a companion Mac iOS app.

It has a solid interface, and performs great on a both high speed LAN, and slow remote VPN. The touch interface can be switched to mouse quickly when needed, and you have the choice to use the on screen keyboard, or a Bluetooth keyboard.

Wish List

There are a few wishes for future features, such as, Bluetooth mouse support like the Citrix X1, or Jump Desktop Connect App, and the syncing of settings, and remote desktops configs. Though the Mac version does let you import and export, there was no way to import and export from the iPad or iPhone, that I can find.

Give it a try, next time you're looking for an RDP app!

It's not often I install anything from physical media anymore, but it still has it's uses. This USB stick, will be used to install ESXi, on my Intel NUC's, and the Mac Mini, in am upcoming post. I'll explore PXE boot in the future, as well, once the core infrastructure is completely operational.

Prep

Download the ESXi ISO from the VMware Download Website. This ISO needs to be written to the USB, and be made bootable. There are many applications which can do this for you, in this example, we'll be using UNetbootin.

Download the appropriate version for your OS. In this case, we'll be using apt-get to install UNetbootin on Ubuntu 18.04.

Create VMware ESXi USB Install Media

Add Repo

Open a terminal console, and type the following, to add the apt repository: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gezakovacs/ppa

Install UNetbootin

Type: sudo apt-get update

Then type: apt-get install unetbootin

Type Y, to install

Write ISO to USB, and Make Bootable.

From the Ubuntu desktop. select activities, and search for unetbootin, and click to open.

UNetbootin gives the option to select, and download a distribution/version, or an ISO can be chosen.

Select Diskimage, navigate to, and select the VMware ESXi downloaded from earlier. Click OK to begin.

It was a long time coming, buying proper Lab hardware. If you read my post here, then you know the state of my Lab prior to the rebuild. It was after reading a couple of Blogs by Florian @virten, one of which was https://www.virten.net/2018/05/esxi-on-7th-gen-intel-nuc-kaby-lake-dawson-canyon/, that I decided on the Intel NUC.

It's performed exceptionally well, and met my requirements of, remote vPro/ilo connectivity, as well as low power consumption. I have two in operation, servicing the lab, and am quite happy with the speed/performance, as well as, the ease of upgrade/install.

As I've mentioned in prior posts, you don't need a bunch of expensive hardware to learn, and have a working lab. It's just easier to configure, and allows you to run more virtual machines at one time.

Time to install the Active Directory Domain Controllers, centralized user management, Group Policy, Single Sign On (SSO), deploy applications, among other fun. Active Directory is the foundation of any enterprise Microsoft environment, there will be many things to explore in the upcoming labs.

Create the First DC

Open a connection with the VMware Host, or vCenter, and Select Create VM.

Assign the VM a name, select the compatibility, Guest OS family, Guest version, and click next.

Choose the datastore, to store the virtual machine files.

Customize the VM settings as desired. Change the network card to VMX3NET for better performance, and change the CD/DVD to the location of the Microsoft 2016 installation ISO.

Click Finish, to Create the VM

Power On the VM, and click on the remote window, to open a remote console session tab.

Windows Install

You should see the VM boot off the Windows 2016 Install ISO. Press any key to boot from the CD

Select Language, Time/Currency format, Keyboard Layout, Click Next.

Click Install Now.

Select the edition of 2016 Server to install, Standard or Datacenter. Choose Desktop Experience for a GUI desktop, else it's Server Core.

Accept the Terms of Service, and click Next

Choose which disk to install Windows.

Installing

Set the Administrator password, and verify.

Install VM Tools

The first thing needed, is to install the VMware Tools, which will optimize the performance, and interaction with the Guest OS.

In the VM Actions, select Guest, then Install VMware Tools

Once the disk is mounted on the Guest VM, run the install.

Click Next

Select the type of setup to be installed. I've chosen the default of typical. Click Next

Click Install

When the install is complete, click Finish.

Click Yes to Reboot

Log back in after reboot

Configure Network

From Server Manager, click on the nic, in this case Ethernet0

Assign a Static IP, Subnet, Default Gateway, DNS server, and click OK.

Click on the Computer Name, click OK.

A name change requires a reboot. Reboot, and log back in.

Patch for Life

Click on Windows Updates, then Check for Updates.

Select, and apply any available updates.

Reboot when required, and log back in.

Continue to check, and apply updates, until no more are available.

Enable RDP for Remote Access

In my lab environment I'm enabling RDP, and selecting to allow non network authenticated clients. This is not a secure setting and is only used here to ease setup of the lab, until the core is up.

Create the second Domain Controller VM, install, assign Hostname, assign IP, enable RDP, and patch until current.

Install Domain Controller, DNS, and Group Policy

To install the DC and DNS roles, and Group Policy Feature, navigate to the Server Manager Dashboard, and select Add Roles and Features.

Click Next

Click Next

Click Next

Select Active Directory Domain Services

Click Add Features

Select DNS Server, and click Next

Select Group Policy Manangement, and Click Next

Select Restart server if required by clicking Yes

Click Install

Promote the DC

Once complete, Click on Tasks, click Post Installation Configuration, and promote this server to a domain controller

Select Add New Forest, assign a Root Domain Name, and click Next

Leave the defaults, and assign a Directory Services Restore Mode Password

Click Next

When the install is finished the server will reboot.

Why

Why change the MAC address? Obviously it's there for a reason. There are reasons to change it as well.

A couple of those reasons are:

  • Blend in - If all the devices on the network are Apple MAC addresses , an attackers machine with another vendor will standout.
  • Masquerade - Pretending to be an device already approved to be on the network, such as in a MAC filtered wireless lan.

The BIA option, seems interesting as it was unknown to me previously. It would be interesting to see if VMware addresses have that locally administered bit set, but that's for another lab.

To install SSH, open a terminal and type: sudo apt install ssh

Type Y to continue

To configure the SSH service to start on boot, type: sudo systemctl enable ssh

Note the systems IP address, type: ip addr

Open your SSH terminal of choice on another system, to test your newly setup SSH installation. Enter the IP, User, and Password, to test.

Everything worked, I'm in!

In this lab, I'm installing Chromium on Ubuntu 18.04. For me it's a new app to explore, but still familiar enough to to actually be useful to use, and get some work done.

It's definitely a One and Done, type of install. Open a terminal connection and type: sudo apt install chromium-browser

Type Y to continue

It appears the installation was successful. Now to test.

Click on Activities in the upper left hand corner, type Chromium in the search area, and select Chromium Web Browser

Looks a lot like Chrome. Now time to explore.

There are a few options, when it comes to Kali, and running it as a VM. Available for download are, prebuilt VM images, as well as different prebuilt ISO's, depending on the environment. Here, I'm downloading the full ISO, and going to install manually, apply all outstanding updates, and install/configure SSH.

Kali Download

Go to Kali.org download section and select you desired download.

Create the Virtual Machine

I've opened a VMware HTML5 client session with the Host, as I have not yet installed the VSCA. Click Create VM.

Name the VM, select VM options, and configure system resources. The only non default item I configured, was to change the CD/DVD to DataStore ISO, and mount the Kali ISO, downloaded earlier.

Kali Installation

Start the VM, and click on the little remote window, to open a remote console connection tab.

When the boot menu appears, select Install

Set a Language

Select a Location

Choose a Keyboard

Enter the Lab Domain Name

Set a Root password

Reenter the Root password

Set Time Zone

Setting up the disk partitions, I'm selecting Guided setup with LVM. I'll explore best practices, and different partition scheme's in a future lab.

Select the disk to be partitioned

Mentioned above, I've chosen to put everything on one partion

Select Yes, to write changes to disk

Select Finish Partitioning, and write changes to disk

Select Yes, to continue

Installing

Select No to Network Mirror

Installing Grub

Select Yes, to install Grub to MBR

Select drive to make system bootable

Installation Complete, select Continue

Rebooting

System is up

Patch Current

To check for, and apply all available updates, type the following: apt-get update && echo 'y' | apt-get upgrade && echo 'y' | apt-get dist-upgrade && echo 'y'

Setup SSH

Next, I'm setting up SSH. First thing is to create a key. Type: ssh-keygen

Answer file in which to save the key, and assign a password

Since we are using Root to login, edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Change the option PermitRootLogin to Yes. Save and Exit the file

Restart the SSH service by typing: service ssh restart

Test SSH

Open your SSH client of choice on another device, and test SSH to Kali

Accepted the thumbprint, and we are in!

Now Explore

Now with Kali installed, I have a ton of stuff to explore and lab!

Replace vnc4server, if you have a different VNC server of choice.

Once the installation is complete reboot by typing: sudo reboot
